Among the different classes of DNA analogues, peptide nucleic acids (PNA) are structurally endowed for designing backbones that can accommodate nucleobases on two sides. Such PNAs –– termed bimodal PNA (bm-PNA) –– have two faces mounted on dissimilar necks (spacer chains) and can concurrently bind two different complementary DNA/RNA/PNA to yield a variety of multistranded hetero complexes such as double duplexes, triplex of duplexes, triple double duplexes and tetraplexes. Recent studies on the design, synthesis, and complementation studies of such novel PNAs that complex with DNA/RNA/PNA in two modes (bimodal) and the synergistic thermal stability effects from each component of the assemblies will be presented.
